After years of isolation, the students in Stage Crew and Musical Theater are aching for face-to-face interactions. They crave seeing and hearing each other. Maybe that is why so many students enrolled to work on the musical this year. With more than 100 students involved in performing, designing, and creating costumes and props for our upcoming show, we need help keeping their creations safe and organized. A normal junior high dressing room is a sea of skirts, tights, shoes and sock (yes, one sock. Always only one sock.). Students often approach me with panic just before they are to go on stage. "My shorts are missing!" or "Where is my SHOE?!" These storage bags will fulfil many purposes beyond the obvious, "Help these sweet kiddos keep track of their stuff." First, every student in the musical theater class will have their name and character name displayed on their bag, to give them a sense of pride, like they belong to something important. Every bag will also display a student-made, individualized flow chart so they can experience what a professional costume designer or actor might use backstage. Stage Crew students prepare props and costume pieces for an entire semester. The storage bags will keep all the accessories, props, and costume pieces they create a safe home so they last and the audiences will get to see their work. They will help teach actors and costume technicians how to sort, organize and care for theatrical supplies properly for years to come. Finally, the teachers can spend less time hunting for lost items or trying to make quick, last-minute repairs, and focus more on what matters: THE STUDENTS!
