Because my students live in an affluent community, they are often sheltered from problems that their peers in other communities around the world might face. English is a subject of the humanities, meaning it is where we study what it means to be human. By building a classroom library of diverse perspectives and experiences, my students will better understand and begin to empathize with those they might not have felt connected with before. These books will show my students new stories told from narrators of different genders, identities, races, mental and physical abilities.
