It cannot be debated that COVID-19 has had a significant effect on the social-emotional development of my students. In my classroom when we first shut down because of COVID I started a couple aquariums in my classroom and would update my students along with their online learning. Given that I teach woodworking, remote learning was very difficult since most students don't have access to wood shops outside of the school. I made lessons around building aquarium stands and when class finally started back up in person, my classroom was flooded by students wanting to look at the tanks that up until that point they had only seen online. I have noticed the calming benefits of having aquariums in the classroom, whether its the sound of the running water from the filter, or just getting to see the fish swim around the tank, students are always excited to see new fish in the tank and to watch the fish grow. Up until this point this project has been completely funded by me and I have loved seeing how it has helped some of my more anxious students calm down and feel safe. Students come in from the wood shop into the classroom and the aquariums draw them in. Help me to continue creating a safe and calm environment for my students to achieve whatever they set their minds to, they deserve that. I just would love to help students do best when there are so many things that they are constantly trying to overcome.
