For the first several years of elementary school, a main focus is helping students learn to read. From about 4th grade on our focus becomes helping students read to learn! One of the best ways to do that is with historic fiction. Hand a student a textbook about history and they may learn some names and dates of events that took place. Hand a student a historic fiction novel and suddenly they become passionate learners who learn to see the struggles and perspectives of humans who are both different and the same as themselves! I want to challenge the 4-6 grade students in my school to read the novel, "Words on Fire," to ignite a passion for reading to learn, to help history come alive, and to encourage compassionate, understanding, kind humans who can see other people's perspectives. I am hoping to arrange to have the author of this book, Jennifer A. Nielsen, visit our students and our school to do a writer's workshop with our students and to have lunch with the students who successfully finish this book before her visit.
