Covid-19 took a tremendous toll on our students. I have seen an increase in anxiety while the students are learning and the students have lost motivation to learn. The arts are intertwined in every subject. Most stem projects require art. When my students are building catapults or a dam, they need to be able to visualize what they want to accomplish. Geometry projects are all about shapes and lines. You can teach geometry through art. Having the students design pictures with geometric shapes, such as abstract art is a great way to reach the students. They usually do this either on paper or on their computers and print the design out to share. Stories read in language arts are understood better when students can visualize it. I often have students draw what they are seeing when I read to them. It helps them remember the details of a story. Being able to have time to just be creative and be able to apply it to everyday learning is so important for these students. As my class was working on a writing project this year, I asked them to be creative and use their imagination in their writing. One of my students looked at me and said, "What is imagination?" I tried to explain and he said, "I don't understand." I realized that during Covid-19, many of my students were not exposed to creative projects. The arts are also important for social and emotional needs. It is a place where they can draw, act, dance, or sing what they are feeling emotionally and gives them an opportunity to connect with others who have common interests.
