I recently did a reading survey with my students so I could adapt our classroom library/literacy resources to fit their interests and needs. Our books are getting old and many of them are not decodable for our young readers. From my survey I found out some students feel excited about reading but also nervous. They are so excited to read about non-fiction topics. Some prefer to read alone, with a friend, or read along while listening. My survey showed that 54% loved listening along. My goal is to provide books for my students to read that will engage them based on their interests, excite them, and help them feel confident, while also giving them options of how to read (alone, with a partner, with an audio book). I want to do this by updating our classroom library to fit the engagement needs of our class, giving them options that are decodable on their level to help them gain practice and confidence, and provide options for their reading preferences (with a small group, alone, or reading along with an audio CD) that will support them in their journey to becoming an engaged and proficient reader.
