Reading books about diverse and interesting people helps connect with the world outside of our small, rural community. Being exposed to science gets kids excited to try new things and expand their horizons. COVID-19 has resulted in kids spending significantly more time on electronic devices, primarily on games and videos. Academic and intellectual reading and stimulation are at what feels like an all-time low in our community, and I am trying to do everything I can to provide our students with information and experiences to change the trajectory and help them work towards a better future. I am requesting books to support wide-reading and improve domain literacy in my STEM students. In addition to ebook and other reading sources, I want to have my students read a broad range of high-quality STEM-related literature. This will help my students build domain-specific vocabulary and comprehension, as well as expose them to some of the diverse ways that science and math are critical to the world and future careers. I am also requesting additional lab equipment to give my students a more hands-on learning experience in physics and earth science classes. Specifically, the items requested will support work involving electricity, magnetism, light, and optics. I am working to move towards more inquiry-based learning in my classes, which has been shown to significantly improve long-term learning outcomes in students. Actually touching and performing hands-on themselves will help generate more interest in STEM subjects and help bring science to life for my students.
