These Garmin GPS handheld receivers will allow us to take our classroom outside and really apply the concepts my students are learning in our Geography class. Because we will only have a few of them, the lessons will rely heavily on teamwork and cooperation as well as developing the social-emotional skills that go along with them. Students learn best when they get to DO. By getting these students up out of their seats, out of the classroom, my hope is to engage them in active learning at a time when so much of what we are having to do in our classrooms is managed by outside forces beyond our control. By using these GPS handheld devices, they will gain a new appreciation for the simple turn-by-turn directions they are so familiar with. Their introduction to working with an unfamiliar piece of technology will serve them well as they navigate the rapidly progressing digital age.
