My seventh-grade students are eager to make the world a better place. We just started reading Alan Gratz's book Refugee. As a class, we would like to help refugees in our community by making fleece baby blankets and knit hats. My students are also in need of social emotional learning that comes from reading literature and applying it to their situations. Giving students a service opportunity, as well as reading material to help them be more empathetic will help them gain coping skills in the COVID-19 pandemic. Lifting Hands International is in need of these items for refugees in our community. Participating in a service-learning project will benefit the refugees as well as my students.
