Students get paired up with books that fit their levels and a level slightly higher. They connect this unit with current events that are done digitally. Most students check these books out to read at home, discuss, and connect to any other current events of their choice. They do both a writing assessment and a project of choice that stems from this Holocaust Unit: family background research, countries and their governments, hardships of war, benefits or items created in war that we still use. What this particular unit does without just telling students not to bully, but shows them the negative and major effects of bullying, harassment, and hate. This amazing project and unit shows a need for kindness, acceptance, and tolerance better than any lecture at recess. Students follow a heartfelt story that they chose and ask touching questions like, "Why do they hate so much?" "Is this like the Gladiators we learned about in history?" "Why are people treated so badly?" In the end, the questions they ask they have asked themselves, and I believe keep in mind when working with, thinking about, and fitting into this world.
