Learning takes place through the process of communication. The ability to communicate with peers and adults in the educational setting is essential for a student to succeed in school. I have 80 to 100 students each year that I work with who have varying needs with their communication skills, including articulation, using correct grammar and age-appropriate grammar in sentences, understanding what is said to them, and being fluent speakers. I also have some students that don't talk verbally and need to learn how to say words or use a device to help those students request. The 14 books and one tall tale story telling board help with understanding receptive language, story elements, and understanding inferences and nuances and how to share stories and information. The 5 sets of mini objects (and food boxes to store them in) target articulation skills by allowing kids to have a hands on manipulative as they practice producing sounds and CVC words correctly (research based to improve articulation, The Spot It Game and Animal and Food Card Games help work on categorical concepts. The storage bins are to keep everything organized. The noun vocabulary cards, sentence flips and two mad libs are to target grammar concepts, the two Calico Critter sets, two play do sets, and wooden dollhouse help build language in non-verbal students who do not have access to these toys for developing turn taking and beginning language skills, the velcro dots are used for requesting boards to help these children request with pictures, and the paper clips and folders help each student keep track of their work and progress in an organized fashion. These materials build those critical language skills for learning and developing positive face to relationships with peers and adults in the school setting.
