Many students don't have the opportunity to cook or bake advanced foods at home like we do in the classroom. The opportunities these students have to make things like danishes or layered cakes, or learn how to fabricate a whole chicken or filet a fish, are opportunities and skills that they wouldn't get to learn at home due to their financial or socio-economic status. These are the advanced and technical skills my students can apply in their personal lives outside of high school. To be able to allow my students to learn to do knife skills and baking and pastry skills, we need to start with basics in safety and sanitation. New color coded cutting boards will allow students to avoid cross contact with major allergen foods and avoid cross-contamination between meats and vegetables. More dish and laundry soap will help my students do dishes properly as well as towel laundry so they can clean dishes and their kitchens. New laundry baskets will help distinguish where certain types of towels go and allow me to label them both in English and Spanish for my ELL students. This will also help keep the dirty rags from the clean rags to avoid cross-contamination or cross contact. Due to COVID, my classes have been getting less and less funding. Because of this, my equipment has not been updated to keep up with the demand and use of them. Some equipment is falling apart and I haven't been able to find the budget to get new equipment like cutting boards or cake pans. The demand to join my Baking and Pastry classes is high. New cake pans will allow more students to join my classes to match the demand to join this class.
