Students who require tier 3 interventions and supports can sometimes struggle with feeling anxious and overwhelmed. These emotions often escalate, and they have a difficult time trying to calm down or redirect their emotions. This calm down corner and option for differentiated seating will allow my students a place to re-direct their emotions and calm down, as well as provide them with an opportunity to engage in reading materials that they can see their identities reflected in. Having this corner in my classroom will provide students with a place to redirect their emotions, as well as have a comfortable seating arrangement. Students will be more motivated to address and manage their emotions quicker to remain in the classroom environment. It is essential that these students remain in the environment in order to achieve more success from their time at school. When coronavirus first closed school in 2020, many of my students were just beginning their high school education and struggled to find motivation during such an uncertain time. This led to a decrease in their academic performance which has contributed to their enrollment in my program. As omicron resurges and causes uncertainty, these students deserve a comfortable place to redirect their anxieties while trying to complete or realign their goals of high school graduation.
