Many diverse students often struggle with school and reading, because they don't know English as well as they would like. Novels in verse are books that grapple with real-world situations and characters, whether past or present, but the books have fewer words per page, giving the appearance of a poem. These particular novels in verse focus upon students from other cultures. All students need to see themselves in the pages of stories so they can feel a sense of belonging in this world. When students feel this, they allow themselves to grow socially and emotionally as they learn that they, too, are important and their own personal stories are worth sharing.
