These materials will provide each student team with a styrofoam head and a selection of available materials to be used to design a helmet. Students will apply the engineering design process as they learn to apply the physics of collisions to design and build a helmet device that will keep the brain (in this case, a grape) safe after a sudden impact. Students will have a limited 'budget' and will have to make choices about which products to 'purchase' for their final design project. This project will provide my students with a fun, interesting, and informative challenge that will combine aspects of engineering design with real-world physics applications that involve a topic that is extremely relevant in their lives.
