Unfortunately, most high school classrooms are equipped with individual desks that have the chair attached. These desks often create tripping hazards when they are configured in a way that allows for groups to work together. It is also harder to arrange desks in a way that makes them easy for students with varying needs to easily get in and out of the desks. All of these situations impede our ability to foster group learning to reconnect with peers. This is a crucial component of learning and one that was lost during a year of remote learning. My district does not have the furniture that would allow me to create effective group work settings that are also accessible by all students. I have already used my own money to purchase additional desks and have created group seating for 12 students. The feedback was unanimous; all students preferred the shared table experience, yet I could not provide it to the 28 other students in my room in any given class period. This project will still not get my entire class covered but it will push me further towards my goal.
