Intonation, or playing "in tune" is an important thing for every musical ensemble to learn. There are many teaching strategies to help with this, but having a tuner the students can see is one of the most concrete ways to help them. Students see in real time whether they are playing flat, sharp, or in tune, and how far off they are. Tuners with clips can attach to their instruments to pick up only their sounds, letting them tune even while other students are playing! After using tuners regularly, students develop a concept for intonation and "feel" for what playing in tune is like. This prepares them for higher-level intonation concepts such as hearing waves in the sound, and overtones. We have a small set of tuners in our classroom already, but most are out of batteries, do not have clips, and there are far too few for everyone in my classes to use them at the same time. The batteries requested would make sure we have enough power for years to come. The tuners with clips would provide each student with personal feedback, rather than feedback for everyone sitting near them. The extra tuners would make sure each student has access to the tuners every day, and students in need can check them out to use at home. The shoe organizer would help us keep them organized, untangled, and assign specific slots to each student. The organizer would also let us face the tuners out so I can glance at them at the end of the day and make sure all of them are turned off.
