Globalization means that the world is shrinking—not literally in size, of course, but in the ability of a person, object, or idea to interact with a person, object, or idea in another place. People are plugged into a global-scale economy and culture, producing a world that is more uniform, integrated, and interdependent. COVID has disrupted the global supply chain and shown just how much we interact with the world. Using these STEM car kits, I plan to have students work with various scenarios to demonstrate cottage industry, the impacts of the Industrial Revolution on production and pricing, as well as outsourcing manufacturing to other countries. I will create an in-class simulation of industry to help students make connections to content. Through their participation in this project, students will improve more than with an online lecture. They will learn cooperation and decision-making skills, as well as develop an emotional response to curriculum that might not evoke the same response from simple textbook readings. Students need more of this deep, enriching in-class learning experience now more than ever.
