PlayLab is an interactive sculpture that encourages play-based learning among students. Specifically, PlayLab functions as a makerspace for student-led workshops and supports student-created games and designs. It also encourages student leadership through the recess ambassador program and provides teachers with a fun and interactive learning tool. The materials outlined below will be used to 1) construct elements of PlayLab’s physical structure and 2) become tools and materials that students will integrate into future designs. PlayLab is a plywood structure comprised of benches, storage units, a materials library, and an interactive display space. (Note: the plywood elements have received funding from a separate grant). The metal grid, outlined in the proposed budget, will be fastened to the plywood base and serve as a flexible display space where students can hang and interact with artwork. Other requested materials — including paper mache mix, marbling inks, origami paper, washi tape, bone folders, and corner rounders — will be stored in PlayLab and used to enhance student works on paper. Materials like felt and plastic sewing needles will be used for making costumes and props. These items will be stored in PlayLab's dedicated materials library, along with other found resources like cardboard and paper. Ultimately, this will make tools and resources more accessible, thus encouraging creative play among students.
