COVID-19 was emotionally taxing on everyone but especially on children. My students have returned to school this year with a noticeable lack in their coping and social skills. PE is a great outlet for kids to learn social-emotional skills such as social/self awareness, building relationships, self-management, and empathy while releasing stress through physical activity. I am so glad class is back in session! My students love learning and playing new sports and haven't had the opportunity to participate in stick handling sports like hockey and badminton yet. I would love to give them a new stress outlet and knowledge of a lifelong activity by teaching them these two new sports with the equipment I have requested. The hockey sticks and badminton rackets would allow students to have a chance to practice the motor skill of striking which is crucial to so many other universal sports, in which they could then participate in more fully. These items could be a catalyst in their physical development and social-emotional coping skills as they participate in new sports they have not yet been introduced to.
