As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, many of my students have fallen behind in reading. They have also been deprived of opportunities to develop their social and collaboration skills. My project addresses both of these problems by providing my students with new, interesting books to read and opportunities to connect with their peers through literature circles. First, the 33 books I have chosen to supplement my classroom library will give my students immediate and easy access to new, high-interest reading content. It is well-known that, for students to make big gains in reading, they need to read a large bulk of texts. The best way to ensure this is to expose them to lots of good books that will pique their interest and inspire them to read. By adding new books to my classroom library, this project will increase student access to books and encourage them to read more, which will help them minimize their reading losses due to COVID. Second, the long periods of social isolation and distancing necessitated by the pandemic have limited student opportunities to develop their discussion and collaboration skills. Part of my project request includes multiple copies of six different high-interest, fantasy novels. I plan to use these books for literature circles, which will give my students the chance to choose a book, read, and discuss it in a small group setting. The opportunity to engage with their peers through literature will directly address my students' pandemic impacted social well-being while simultaneously working to improve their reading and speaking skills.
