Mental and physical health took a dip for students globally in 2020-21. The increase in levels of obesity, anxiety, and depression can be tied to a decrease in physical activity. We've started incorporating movement into our fifth grade class and have seen great results. Dancing in the classroom has been fun and has given the students a brain boost. Doing physical challenges (e.g. pushups, planks) has gotten the students excited to move. The students would like to expand the kinds of physical activities they do throughout the day and they want more challenges. After doing an in-class poll students voted for more sports equipment and pedometers to facilitate classroom challenges. The students wanted pedometers for themselves and for other students so that they could complete challenges across different classrooms. The equipment (e.g. balls and frisbees) would also be shared with other classrooms so that the entire school might benefit from this grant.
