Our school is located on several acres of beautiful marsh front property in Beaufort, SC. We have recently made an effort to establish a walking trail through a lightly wooded area along the marsh with the help of school and community volunteers. As a school counselor, I am using this area to do "walk and talk" counseling sessions with students, especially those who come to my office in crisis and need help calming themselves. The fresh air and the beautiful scenery help our students practice mindfulness and bring students out of crisis by focusing on nature and their surroundings. This area can also be used by our teachers who find themselves overwhelmed and need a moment to regroup and refocus. It would be very beneficial to have a garden bench situated along the trail so that the children and adults who use this space can pause for a moment and find rest among the trees and their surroundings.
