With 90 students reading anywhere between 3rd grade level and 12th grade in 8th grade, I need all the materials I can get to support the varying reading needs. Giving my classes one reading can work, but I often lose comprehension in the lower readers and lose interest in my upper readers. We recently purchased a new curriculum, and with the digital aspect, I am able to adjust assignments based on their reading level. For example, our curriculum is based on short stories that come back to an essential question, that informs our final assignment. The short stories become less engaging when it is not something students can understand. According to my reading assessment that determined their reading level (given to me through the curriculum), I have 5 of 90 students reading at level. That means, when I assign a reading straight from the book, I am only reading 5 of my students. If I had a class set of headphones that I could allow students to use, I could digitally assign a text that is written in their reading level as well as reads it to them! Additionally, I can also adjust assessment questions and other writing assignments to meet their reading level. Not only will they finally be understanding and enjoying the story, they will also be able to listen to and understand directions given to them post reading. Nothing in this world is more valuable than access to education. With headphones, I will be able to give my students fair and equitable access to the things I am trying to teach them. Things will no longer be significantly above or below their heads and we will save time in class trying to catch people up on vocab or concepts.
