Students will use the books both in class, for reading, in-class discussions and activities, and at home for independent reading. It's important to have a class novel to discuss themes and literary devices as a group. In addition, having a hard copy is a break from the screens which many students are on for hours each day. The themes and topics covered in the book — refugees, acceptance, tolerance, trust — are key themes as we move forward in our global society. More and more people are internally displaced due to conflict, unrest, corruption and climate events. Empathy and cultural understanding/appreciation will be emphasized in the unit.
