My students love coming together as a community any chance they get throughout the day. Our rug serves as the meeting point for academic conversation, as well as meaningful discussions with one another. The rug we currently have is too small for students to sit and interact comfortably. As a first year teacher, our current rug was kindly passed down from another teacher. I have tried to allocate space for each student using carpet spots, but unfortunately the rug just isn't a large enough space and students are squished together. I am requesting a larger rug so that all of my students will have space to converse, read, write, and learn more comfortably together. The rug will allow them to develop socially, emotionally, and academically. It is a place to gather for morning meetings, interactive read alouds, and whole class instruction. It is where we have math talks, reading and writing mini lessons, and engage in partner talk. The close proximity allows me to listen closely to what students have to say and interact with them with more ease. A larger rug will ultimately allow us to develop an even stronger learning community.
