Students in my reading class face many challenges. Many are building confidence and working through the struggles of learning to read and facing many obstacles along the way. These students sit on traditional, hard metal chairs while reading and are consistently tipping backward/forward in their chairs, wrapping their legs/feet around the chair legs and even tipping them over as they fidget and feel anxiety while trying their best to read. Many times the constant movement and need to find comfort unknowingly distracts the students from the reading task, interrupting their accuracy and rate. These students need to be afforded every opportunity to make them feel at ease when completing a task that may come so easy to many others. These flexible seating stools will allow for immediate benefits including using up excess energy, increasing engagement and motivation. Research by Matthew T. Mahar et al. states that "Simple in-class activities can boost performance." How wonderful it will be to allow for this flexible seating to afford these hardworking students and even playing field in their journey to be life-long readers!
