In my county, we follow the EL curriculum in English/Language Arts. In Module 3, which we will start teaching in the third quarter, my seventh graders will be reading sections of The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. During this module, we will be teaching a poetry unit with an emphasis on the poetic devices that Frederick Douglass uses in his narrative. We are creating an addition to this unit in which students will read current novels in verse that reflect experiences of Black characters. During this unit, students will read novels in poetic verse that are written by Black authors. We will have six titles with students reading and reflecting on them together in collaborative groups, called literature circles. Between our school library, my classroom library, and my partner's classroom library, we have half of the books we will teach. We are requesting funds for the other half of the books needed. This new project will align perfectly with our poetry standards, our module topic, and with Black History Month in February! Thank you for all of your support!
