Play therapy is a wonderful way to help my students work through emotional difficulties and to deal with unresolved trauma. Some items that I need to support my students include dolls, action figures, puppets, kitchen sets, storage bins/organizers, arts and crafts, sand play containers, board games, and blocks and construction toys. Many of my students lack the language skills they need to express how they are feeling nor do they have a trusted adult to express them to. Through play, toys act as symbols and take on greater meaning. Much can be revealed in how a child interacts with different types of toys and how their behavior changes from session to session. My students use play to act out fears and anxieties or to heal and problem-solve. There are many benefits of play therapy which include: taking more responsibility for certain behaviors; developing coping strategies and creative problem-solving skills; improved self-esteem; improved social skills; empathy and respect for others; alleviation of anxiety/depressive symptoms; and stronger family relationships. Thank you Donors Choose for supporting my students by providing them with the resources that they need to support their social-emotional and behavioral development.
