TI-84 Graphing Calculators are mandatory for students taking the Regent's exam in NYS. We provide them in the classroom, in study hall, and for the final exam - but we do not have surplus calculators to supply for our lower income students who cannot afford to purchase one themselves. I teach the 8th grade Accelerated Algebra course and some of my bright future mathematicians are from lower income homes. They are gifted students - but they don't have the same access to the tools required for the course. Holding and using that TI-84 in your own hands is so important! While it is true that students can access the TI-84 on their smartphone (if they have one) it's just not the same as holding that calculator in their hands - and pushing those buttons just like they will be doing on their final. I want my students to be able to have the same advantages as students whose family life allows for them to own and use their own calculator. Many of my student will borrow a calculator in study hall- but they are not able to take the calculator home to study for an assessment or complete their homework. Additionally - when a student is quarantined and they are participating in class via Zoom, if they don't have a TI-84 calculator at home they can't participate in the lesson. They lose out on that instruction time. This project will allow my students the ability to sign out a calculator for the school year and be in control of when and where and how often they work on their math, and their ability to not lose any ground when quarantined. At the end of the year I will collect the calculators back, and I provide this opportunity year after year.
