Research has shown that multisensory tools aid neuro-divergent students in performing to their academic potential. Oftentimes, students who are in need of stimulation create that stimulation themselves through frequent movements, daydreaming, loud noises, and/or disrupting other students. "Grounding" tools allow students to receive the external sensory input they need to focus. Our Title 1 school is looking for community support in meeting this need for students, since grounding tools are often a large financial investment. We need one of these grounding tools in particular: a weighted lap pad, which will help our diverse learners calm their nervous systems enough to focus and perform at their best. Students will benefit from the weighted lap pads by experiencing the comfort of gentle pressure on their legs while learning, which will help meet that multisensory need. The lap pads will be stored in classrooms and the counselor's room, and given to students with multisensory needs of neuro-divergent learning styles.
