Covering table tops with dry erase film will help my students visualize economic concepts covered in class. My classroom received new furniture this year, and some desks have dry erase tops, while others don't. I want to give all students access to this surprisingly useful tool. By covering my regular tables with dry erase film, all students will be able to use them to brainstorm, practice models, or just doodle.
Drawing helps my students think. We are a 1:1 school, meaning all students have laptops, but they benefit from the physical act of drawing and writing. Having dry erase table tops means kids can doodle and write without wasting paper. They can work through ideas in a low-stakes environment that won't be graded. They can contribute ideas within a group by adding notes to each other's writing. They can draw silly pictures to help stay focused in class. They can even play games with each other and build classroom community.
I have been surprised how much my students have liked having dry erase desks, and for such a simple thing, it's helped my kids feel more comfortable in my classroom. I want ALL of my students to get that benefit by covering my few regular tables with dry erase film and level the field within my room.
