Our school is located in the rural area of Roanoke, VA and our children reside in high poverty residences. Because of this, it is often quite challenging for families to purchase items for their children for the holidays, although their hearts may truly desire to do so. The holiday gifts that are requested will brighten the faces, hearts, and minds of my 2 and 3 year old students! Although they all have delays and unique challenges in their development, these gifts will benefit them immensely. Not only will the gifts aid in enhancing their cognitive, language, and motor skills, but I can also see the children smiling on the inside and outside as they explore their new materials! The leapfrog word books will expose the children to a variety of vocabulary, both in English and Spanish. Because all of my children have speech and language delays, additional exposure to common, everyday vocabulary will only help to increase their language, cognitive, and literacy skills. The playdough, pop-it gadgets, monkey math game, and paint sets will work to strengthen the student’s fine motor skills. Hand-eye coordination, small muscle movements, tactile/sensory development, etc. will all be enhanced with those items. As for the doll, truck sets, and playhouse broom/dust set, these items will aid in building the children’s cognition and imagination as they explore them and will just put a mere smile on their faces as they are items that they genuinely enjoy interacting with. I hope you all will help make this an enjoyable Christmas for these wonderful little people that I have the privilege of instructing. Thank you!
