Flexible seating allows students to choose where to work. As a special education teacher, I have many students that are not able to sit still. They fidget around, their legs are restless, and they get out of their hard table chairs often as a release. I have one current alternative seat, and I have noticed that my students are less distracted and more engaged when they are given the opportunity to sit in that chair. I want all my students to have that same opportunity on a daily basis, instead of once every two weeks, so that they can stay motivated, engaged, comfortable, and feel safe while learning. The products that I have selected will help students have additional seating choices when working independently or with me at our help table. While my students are excited to be back in the classroom with their peers and teachers, they would undoubtedly benefit academically and behaviorally from flexible seating in the classroom. Some even request to sit on the floor to complete their work, which is obviously unsanitary and unhealthy. Many of my students struggle with math, and one way to increase their engagement is not only by offering them choices when it comes to what they will learn but also where they can learn it. Since they are limited to having to be inside a classroom, the next best thing is to provide them with options for seating. Now when my students begin projects related to Nevada Academic Content Standards 8.G.A.1 & 8.G.A.2 (Understand congruence and similarity using physical models, transparencies, or geometry software), they can feel comfortable and focused on the shapes and designs they are creating without the distraction of their fidgeting and movement.
