I am a 2nd-4th grade dyslexia teacher at a public charter school in Waco, TX. Our school was started in 1998 to serve economically disadvantaged Pre-K through 1st grade kids of East Waco and has since expanded to include all grade levels. Because of who we serve and where we get our money from (Charter Schools are funded differently than neighborhood schools), we often lack the financial resources to fully supply our classrooms. Our campus is so tight on space that we have 2 dyslexia & 3 SpEd teachers squeezed into one classroom. With the nature of our set-up, there are constant distractions happening in our room. It can be very challenging to keep the students focused & engaged during a lesson because students look up every time someone comes in the room, walks by, etc. We have done our best to create walls & separate our areas using bookshelves & file cabinets, but it would be so helpful to have an actual room divider (or two). Our dyslexia & SpEd students deal with enough distractions & challenges during their day...when they come to our room for additional support, we want them to feel a sense of calm & be able to focus on their learning. Creating separate spaces in our room would be such a huge help! Our students deserve the best possible learning environment to help them grow into confident readers & writers.
