The basic learning of this foundational knowledge is a missing component of the students I work with. COVID -19 and the in person learning that children have missed has only served to compound these difficulties. If a child is able to access the sounds in words and connect them to the letters and spelling patterns, it will pave the way to taking on literacy. Such skills need to be made concrete through hands on and engaging activities. The sand helps make the letter and word learning a tactile experience. The pop it bracelets and the cubes will allow students to make listening to the sounds in words a concrete activity. The most critical piece of this is to then apply these skills to text. The phonics readers I have chosen will allow the students to see the skills they are learning in action within the printed word.
