The students in my 6th grade Language and Literature class all struggle to read. Finding new and fun ways to engage these students in learning is a challenge. The use of DeskCycles in my classroom is twofold. First, the cycling motion helps the students to regulate their bodies and focus on instruction. Some students simply rest their feet on the pedals and rock them back and forth. Other students ride as if they are on the final leg of the Tour De France! Secondly, these bikes will be used in conjunction with our class read-aloud of The Lightning Thief. As we follow Percy Jackson's travels across the United States, we will challenge ourselves to collectively pedal the distance between each city on his journey. The students will tally their mileage daily and calculate their weekly mileage to add to the class total. (Sneaking in some math work to our Language and Literature instruction always makes me smile!) A beach party is planned for when we finally reach Los Angeles.
