The requested supplies will enrich student learning in a multitude of ways. Gardening engages all 5 senses and is a great way to teach students about planning, responsibility, patience, record keeping/data collection and even failure. Therefore, as we approach our plant unit, I would love for my students to be able to plan a school garden. We have already gained approval and have a space designated. However, our classroom lacks windows and sunlight, as such, we need the greenhouses and light to simulate the outdoor environment as we will start all the plants from seeds in the classroom. Activities will span the course of two quarters and students will begin by explore the difference between monocot and dicot plants by germinating seeds for both types of plants. We will continue our exploration for several weeks as the plants grow we will take note of the differences that monocots and dicots plants have. Students will record both quantitative and qualitative data regarding their plants. In addition, we will look at native plant types vs invasive plant types and discuss the importance of planting only native plants for our area. Our lesson will continue with us eventually planting the plants that the students have grown around our school campus. We will also discuss the importance of pollinators and their impact on the environment. The materials requested will assist in enriching the lesson for several topics including: Classification of living things, plant structures, energy flow through ecosystems, patterns of inheritance, population dynamics, and human impact. The lessons are also cross curricular as many students will need to read up on the type of plant they choose to grow (ELA) and use their math skills when determining how many plants to plant in a given area, etc.
