My project would create an after-school chess club at our middle school. This place would provide a safe and supportive place for kids to get an after-school snack and meet with peers to play chess. I have requested chess timers and roll-up chess boards with chess pieces. The academic benefits of chess are well studied. Chess has been shown to improve concentration and memory and enhance reading and math skills. In addition, chess fosters logic, critical thinking and creativity. From my perspective as a school social worker, I can see the far-reaching benefits of chess with learning essential character traits and social emotional learning for our students. So many of the kids I work with struggle with struggle with low self-confidence and struggle with peer relationships. Strong evidence has shown chess to be effective in developing self esteem and social skills among students. Chess has been shown to help students build grit and perseverance, helping students to understand that challenges are part of the journey. These are valuable life lessons that they will carry with them throughout their academic career and adult lives.
