Students are struggling more than ever! They are struggling with motivation, work ethic, the rigor of school, social interactions, and the ability to stay positive. Over 23% of our students were identified as "At Risk" during our SOS (Signs of Suicide) screening. This data has really motivated us to get creative and find a way to reach our students so that we can better help them. We want to create a room where students can go to recollect themselves when the stresses of becoming a middle schooler become overwhelming and difficult for them to cope with. The calming room will have colored lighting, beanbag chair, and many types of manipulatives to help students get away from stresses and relax. We will have an organizer shelf to put everything into as well as extra trays. We will have manipulatives like stress balls, fidget and magic cubes, and markers, crayons, and coloring books. We will have putty, playdough, and kinetic sand to help students get creative and relieve stress. We will have wall decals in order to help them relax as well as a sound machine that will play nature sounds. We will have the jelly fish tank lamp, plasma ball, and sand art to help calm students and give them something to focus on. We will have timers to help students focus in calming within a certain time frame. The items in our cart are to help students find an outlet to express themselves and to get them distracted enough to help them refocus so that the counselors can then work with them better. We have many manipulatives and repeated items because our goal is to try to reach all of our students in the school. We want to help improve their social emotional learning in order to improve success.
