Along with building knowledge, reading builds empathy and helps develop self identify. These benefits, along with a number of others, are the reason why my 8th graders need books in their hands. My classroom library is a work in progress. I have bought 75 books from a variety of authors and genres. My students need books that provide a window to the world and reflect who they are as well. The readers in my classroom range from reluctant readers who are learning to find the joy in reading to voracious readers who just can’t get enough. All of my readers love to discuss what they read. Their discussions are imperative in today’s world as students need these social connections.
