The last year of the unknown due to COVID-19 has caused many of our students with Autism or other special needs extra anxiety or other emotions that are difficult to express. It has been an adjustment for most of them as they navigate back to in-person learning this year. A sensory room is a therapeutic and safe space within the school building that has a variety of equipment such as a tumbling mat, a calming sound machine, calming music, calming lights, and other stress relieving materials that provide a space for our elementary age students in special education to calm their bodies and focus their minds. The sensory room will help relieve students' anxiety and overstimulation that occurs when they are in the classroom setting. It allows students a short break to use items that have different textures, lighting, sounds and smells that provide relaxation for their bodies and minds to continue learning throughout the day.(1.ME.1.2, 1.ME.2.1, 1.ME.3.2, 1.ME.4.1, 1.ME.5.1)
