You might notice how most of the items requested are snacks. You may be asking yourself, “Why do they need funding for Cheetos? Do Cheetos help students develop social skills?” Our answer would be a resounding yes. With these UCLA PEERS Clinic evidenced-based practices and materials, you will provide our students with the extrinsic motivation to join our 16-week afterschool social-skills program. Lessons focus on making and keeping friends and managing peer conflict and rejection skills. Specific areas targeted include having two-way conversations, choosing appropriate friends, using humor appropriately, planning get-togethers, handling various forms of social rejection (e.g., teasing), and more. The project will directly benefit 15 students who will participate in the lessons. Indirectly the project will impact peers, siblings, family members, and community members by providing the participants with tasks they can take with them. Your contributions will give our students the tools to form meaningful and lasting relationships, improving their quality of life and chances at future success. Motivation and participation are also encouraged through a reinforcement system. Students earn points based on completion of homework and participation in discussions. These points are used to cash in for a party or celebration at the end of the program. Your contributions will also go towards these rewards. Parental involvement and completion of homework activities are critical to these lessons. The binders and dividers will directly benefit parents by containing descriptions of the weekly topics, the list of social rules, and, most important, homework activities and directions. Evidence-based practice and research show that carryover into the natural home and community environments makes this program a success. Thank you for your time and consideration.
