These headphones will allow my first graders to record themselves telling stories and later write about the stories. Oral language is the foundation for writing, hence the title Record/ Tell a story, Write a story. Throughout each year we focus on Reading Literature and informational Standards 1.2- Retell stories, including key details, and identify the main topic. The students listen to the story and use laminated story cards to retell key details in the story. Once students can retell the story, they write about the story, which correlates with writing standards W1.2- and 1.3-write informative/explanatory texts and writing narratives. I listen to each student retell the story, assess their skills and grade their progress. Listening to my 19 students retell stories in class takes up a significant amount of time, so if all my first graders can record themselves retell stories at the same time, I will gain 100 minutes of teaching time during the week. I could listen to students recordings on my prep or after school and be prepared to help students refine their stories. Every student will participate, be heard, and take ownership of their learning while becoming better writers. The sequencing cards and other materials will help my at-risk students, piece together story elements and act as a precursor for writing a story. As with reading, students need context and realia for math as well, so the base ten blocks will help students tell stories in math which incorporates Operations and Algebraic Thinking Standard 1.OA.A Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. The students are eager to learn and grateful to be in school. Funding this project will help students further engage in their learning through technology and help close achievement gaps.
