My resource students are an awesome bunch of 3rd-5th graders who work hard despite learning being more of a challenge for them. Our goal is to make resource a place where students can strengthen both their academics and their study/behavioral skills whilst having FUN at the same time. My students learn best through tactile activities and missed out on the opportunity to learn in the way that's best for them due to COVID. Many of them are also catching up on behavior skills they did not have the chance to learn for not being able to be at school. My students need help in those core basics, e.g. the decoding of regularly spelled one and two-syllable words (RF.2.3b), distinguishing long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words (RF.2.3a). Their handwriting needs work after them largely typing for an entire academic year, and their math skills need help specifically in relation to standard 3.NBT.A.2 (Fluently add and subtract within 1000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value). This funding will allow me to invest in learning materials that appeal to my students and will hone in on the skills needed to master these standards. To motivate students we are also implementing a life-skills based incentive program for our students whereby they can earn resource dollars for striving to complete work, helping others in class, and being a great example of a leader, something which our school values tremendously. Resource Dollars act like real currency and it is helping the students to learn the monetary system, make wise spending choices, and learn about the value of saving. It is something we would love to continue but we would greatly benefit from financial help so we can continue to provide students with the things they enjoy working for.
