Anxiety and stress levels among the student body in our rural Nevada middle school have never been higher. The last year and a half of COVID restrictions and disjointed education have left students feeling isolated, strung out, and very lukewarm about learning math. What better way to wrangle in my students than with a fun after-school club that merges math with games, art, and puzzles? My plan is to provide weekly opportunities for students to engage with math concepts in an inviting and non-threatening way while also building and strengthening the bonds between students and staff. For this, the students will need to be provided with specific math and art materials (as well as cleaning supplies). Origami and string art are among the club activities that will engage the students. I'm positive that once students attend this weekly G.A.P. club (games, art, puzzles)they will develop a curiosity and an interest in math and, more importantly, develop self-esteem and a sense of well-being within themselves.
