These resources will help my students improve their social and interactive skills that were impacted through the pandemic. Chess has been known to help a student strategically think, and improve test scores. Chess is very inclusive within academics, and students have to accurately position their pieces and justify why they are moving them to the different positions. Students use the algebraic grid of the chessboard to identify relative positions of the pieces on the quadrants of the board, which can help them sequence arguments in reading and writing. The resources we included in our shopping list have our chess notation guide, chess boards, that can help aide with this. When students make their moves, they then apply critical writing skills like annotation, evaluation and a description of their best moves. According to the College Career Readiness Standards under the types and purposes standard numbers two and three explain, "Standard 2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content. Standard 3. Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences." In chess students have to accurately notate their moved and through the effective selection and organization of their different pieces have to justify their moves in order to win the game. The resources we have selected will help our students in their academic success and help them socialize while playing a game that can help them improve academically. We hope to continue our chess club throughout our years of teaching, and are grateful that we help build bonds and make new friendships.
