I plan on using these books as a class set. We will read these texts rather than books like To Kill a Mockingbird or Secret Life of Bees. While I understand the importance those texts have in American history, I no longer think they should be the focus of social justice conversations and readings in the classroom. Students want to see themselves in the books they read. They want to be able to connect to what they read and what they learn, otherwise it's in one ear and right out the other. As an educator, I want to be as inclusive as possible, and providing books that are written by authors of color, rather than continuing old trends of old white authors, will be one step towards that inclusiveness that I'm hoping for.
