Due to the outbreak of Covid 19 and the resulting quarantine, students today are struggling to adjust to returning to the classroom. After a year of distance education social, behavioral and study skills have deteriorated. Many students and their families are experiencing differing levels of anxiety, stress and disorientation in returning to school. The students in my classes and on my caseload are particularly affected by this for several reasons. The first is that most of my students are ninth graders. This means that they were in 7th grade when Nevada went into quarantine. They had their entire 8th grade year at home and then were thrust into high school life with very little transition. It has been profoundly difficult for many of our special education students. I would like to create a classroom where students can come with a pressure pass and have a comfortable and pleasing space to rest and settle down. I would like to have activities that are relaxing and educational to calm their fidgets while also working on hand and eye coordination as well as fine motor skills. The dry erase adhesive will be perfect for turning their desks into perpetual and easy to clean scratch paper and doodle pads. I will use it on the walls for instruction, small group activities and games, and for students to send messages to classmates in other classes. My goal is for students to have a place in my room to relax and feel comfortable and safe. When students are at ease, their cognitive functioning increases, and real learning occurs.
