After a full year on a computer, my students need to get their hands dirty and see science at work! We want to grow in the classroom and the school garden. We also want to make homemade fertilizer for the growing systems. Using cafeteria waste from breakfast and lunch, students can learn how to make homemade (and free) fertilizer. Vocabulary and labels can be clearly posted in the composting area, indoor and outdoor garden areas, and in the classroom. Students need to be hands-on to bring science standards alive! This directly addresses NGS 5-LS2-1 and allows students to have a visual resource for how decomposition happens, and why it brings about new life
